GC2014: Microsoft Adding USB Media and DLNA Compatibility To Xbox One

Major Nelson has announced and detailed new features coming to the Xbox One in the near future. Some of these features will be appearing to those involved in the preview programme soon, but most of the features will be implemented in the coming months.

Some of the features include improvements to the friends, snap, messages and Smartglass functionality, but the major improvement seems to be the installation of a brand new app – the Media Player.

The Media Player app will allow users to play media files from an attached USB device or from a network connected home media server that supports DLNA communication protocols. The preview version of the update will only support USB devices, with support for DLNA devices coming soon.

The Xbox One will also support many more formats than Xbox 360, including MPEG-2 and Matroska (MKV) files, which previous consoles had trouble playing correctly.

You can view the full feature list, as well as supported formats, on Major Nelson’s blog.
