The Resident Evil 4 Remake Has Officially Sold Over 7 Million Copies

It's what we've been buyin'

Capcom has announced that Resident Evil 4, last year’s excellent reimagining of the legendary 2005 survival horror hit, has now crossed over 7 million copies sold worldwide.

In addition, cumulative sales of the entire series now exceed 154 million units since the very first Resident Evil launched in 1996.

A portion of the success can be attributed to Capcom’s ongoing support of the game, with the release of the Separate Ways expansion along with the free VR mode DLC for PS VR2 last year, plus last month’s release of the Resident Evil 4 Gold Edition which packs in the main game, the Separate Ways DLC, and the DLC Extra Pack set.

In an accompanying press release where it announced the sales milestone, Capcom says it “remains firmly committed to satisfying the expectations of all stakeholders by leveraging its industry-leading game development capabilities in order to create highly entertaining gameplay experiences,” which is a fancy way of saying it will continue to make good games. Good stuff.

We gave Resident Evil 4 a huge 10/10 in our review last year, with James saying, “Resident Evil 4 translates a game already revered into an absolute masterpiece. The tension is heightened and the combat is stronger than ever, all while still maintaining the corny dialogue and humour that the original game was known for. While there are a few minor aspects missing, Resident Evil 4 is a strong example of what any remake should be and is well worth your time.”

James had similar praise for the Separate Ways DLC, writing, “While the bar wasn’t that high to begin with, Separate Ways is far and away the best piece of DLC ever released for a Resident Evil game. It manages to succesfully build on top of the already rock solid experience that Resident Evil 4 provides to offer up the spotlight that series super spy Ada Wong has always deserved. With a heady mix of horror, action and even espionage, Separate Ways’ incredibly modest price of admission makes it a no brainer. It’s an absolute achievement from the development team and not to be missed.”
