Super Mario Odyssey Is Pretty Much Finished Development

A lot of people were expecting a new 3D Mario platform to make its way into the Nintendo Switch launch lineup, especially when it was featured in October’s trailer. This was not to be as we now know that Nintendo plan to release the game in the holiday season of this year (traditionally October-December).

Some more details about Super Mario Odyssey were revealed on stage at the Japanese Switch event over the weekend. Producer Yoshiaki Koizumi revealed that the game is pretty much finished development, but Nintendo decided not to make it playable due to the fact that it’s still a while off release.

He also revealed some more interesting details about the game. Odyssey pushes players actively explore more than other games. The objective is still to rescue Peach from Bowser, but it takes place outside of the Mushroom Kingdom in a certain Earth across different countries.

He also revealed some more interesting tidbits about the specific levels that we can see in the trailers:

Desert

  • You can enter buildings from doors and explore inside
  • You can go and explore a tower and Tokyo Big site-esque building which you can see far away

Forest

  • Very well-suited stage for exploration
  • They are putting effort into showing nice-looking grass and dappled sunlight through trees

Urban Area

  • Mario can jump to the ground from the top of a skyscraper
  • You can jump and step on humans; you can probably expect what happens when you do that
