E3 2014: Mortal Kombat X Gameplay Revealed

Following on from the rather dark and brooding reveal of the game last week, Warner Bros. and Netherrealm Studios have revealed the first ever gameplay of the new Mortal Kombat game, Mortal Kombat X. Apparently, it’s pronounced X, not “ten”, so there’s that too.

The trailer shows pretty much what you’d usually expect from your standard Mortal Kombat game – a lot of blood, gore and some vicious special and finishing moves. New to the fold are interactable pieces of the environment – and while these were somewhat broken in Injustice, Ed Boon has promised that they will all be blockable and a large majority of them are for more mobility options rather than attacking ones.

The trailer also featured three new characters. We saw two of them in some detail, while the third was shown in a blink and you’ll miss it fatality montage at the end of the footage.

Mortal Kombat X Characters

The first is a yellow female character who can control insects. While she looks like she stepped straight out of Star Wars, she seems to command a wide array of insects to do most of her attacks, including a rather gruesome attack where she eats off Sub Zero’s face using her insect army. The second is a bit of an odd one – and featured a large and armoured hooded man carrying around a cocky and loud mouthed child. We don’t see a lot of their attacks, and their fatality against Scorption is unfortunately cut off too. The final character is an Aztec warrior who looks eerily reminiscent of Ogre from Namco’s Tekken series, and he seems to enjoy drinking the blood of his victims straight from their beating hearts, if his fatality is anything to go by.

As you’d expect from the screengrabs from the trailer – none of the characters have been given names yet.

Sub Zero and Scorpion also get their time to shine in the trailer too – with a large majority of their moveset being changed or tweaked to the point where they’re almost brand new characters. Some of those finishers are absolutely brutal.

Mortal Kombat X runs on a heavily modified Unreal Engine 3. It will be launching for Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One sometime in 2015.
