Press Start’s GOTY 2017 – #6 Resident Evil 7

Camilla said: “Though it didn’t feel much like a Resident Evil game, perhaps until the very end, I really had a great time with this game. I played RE7 in a single sitting because I was so enthralled by the course of the narrative, the world of the Baker House and of course, the spooks. The DLC for this game provides even more depth to the story and even more fun, I’m excited for the future of the series.”

Steven said: “Somehow Capcom managed to bring back the classic Resident Evil feel with gameplay that doesn’t feel out of place in 2017. Rather than falling back on the maligned action-heavy games of the series’ recent past, RE7 pulls some inspiration from definitive titles of modern horror like Penumbra and Amnesia – taking the first-person immersion even further by designing with VR in mind. It’s exactly the modern reinvention that Resident Evil needed to reclaim relevance for a new generation.”

James called the game a return to form in his review and gave it a 9. He said: “Resident Evil 7: biohazard manages to successfully consolidate the exploratory, slower paced, tension filled gameplay of the early games with the modernised visuals and technology of today. A new first person viewpoint will prove controversial with more seasoned veterans but such a change allows Resident Evil 7 to feel fresher than ever before. Make no mistakes, Resident Evil 7 is a victorious progression for the franchise which successfully melds new with old. The weight and harshness that technology like Playstation VR brings to the scares and tension is especially welcome.”
