As per tradition, Devil May Cry 5 offers a few unlockable costumes that are awarded to players for completing certain feats in game. The tradition continues, but with one caveat, each of the costumes in Devil May Cry 5 had to be created in real life before being scanned into the game. What this means is that, unfortunately, we only get a few different coloured costumes rather than full-blown ones.
Still, it’s nothing to turn your nose up at. Some of these costumes in particular unlock some pretty gnarly side effects that most fans wouldn’t be without and we’re here to guide you through it.
This guide doesn’t feature any of the colours you get for preordering – unfortunately as these were already unlocked in my review copy there was no way for me to independently test how they’re unlocked. I’ve included them below though for you, regardless, just in case you haven’t seen them.
Before we jump ahead, it’s worth mentioning that the final costume on this list will be considered a major spoiler so consider that a huge warning before scrolling down. If you’re sensitive to any kind of spoilers this is your final chance to turn back! WE’RE NOT JOKING!
EX Colour for V – Jade and Gold
How To Unlock: This is a bit awkward, but we’re not entirely sure. The costume unlocked for me during my third playthrough around the time I cleared the first two missions where I played as V. Perhaps then, we can surmise this probably unlocks after playing 25 missions total. The jury is still out on this one.
Extra Effects: None, unfortunately. V just looks a bit less emo.
Super Nero
How To Unlock: Complete the game on Dante Must Die. Rank does not matter.
Extra Effects: So many! Nero has unlimited devil trigger, and his sword is in a permanent state of maximum exceed. He even automatically loads his Blue Rose with explosive bullets (instead of having to hold the button) but you’ll still have to charge them. Devil Breakers, as far as I can see, are unaffected.
As per series tradition, using a Super costume reduces your score by 80%.
Super V
How To Unlock: Complete the game on Dante Must Die. Rank does not matter.
Extra Effects: V has unlimited Devil Trigger. This means he can put his demon pets into a permanent buffed state, meaning they can’t be stalemated during combat. He can also summon Nightmare indefinitely. If V rides Nightmare, he can still be damaged, so be careful! Though your Devil Trigger will recharge regardless.
As per series tradition, using a Super costume reduces your score by 80%.
Super Dante
How To Unlock: Complete the game on Dante Must Die. Rank does not matter.
Extra Effects: Dante has infinite Devil Trigger, as well as a fully maxed out Royal Guard gauge. He can also siphon his unlimited Devil Trigger into his Sin Devil Trigger, but this still drains normally when activated and there’s a short time span where it will automatically recharge. That’d just make things too easy!
As per series tradition, using a Super costume reduces your score by 80%.
FINAL SPOILER WARNING FOR BELOW
EX Colour for Vergil – Blue and Gold
How To Unlock: Complete the game on Heaven or Hell mode.
Extra Effects: Nostalgia! Vergil can now be customised to look closer to his Devil May Cry 3 look in all cutscenes.
Before you jump to conclusions this does not mean Vergil is playable. It’s just a costume change for cutscenes and boss battles, similar to Lady, Trish and Nico’s alternate colours.
And that’s about it! I was able to run through the hardest difficulty as well, which is Hell and Hell, but unfortunately nothing seemed to unlock. I’ll do some more investigating and more poking around in the mean time, but for now it looks like that’s it for the unlockables.
