There was an unexpected hero at the 2016 Rio Olympic closing ceremony. Super Mario appeared to help initiate the Olympic transfer between the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Mario appeared on-screen trying to navigate his way to Rio, before going down his signature Warp Pipe. Japan’s Prime Minister appeared out of a Warp Pipe and straight into the Rio Closing Ceremony before fireworks erupted, playing to the signature Mario level-ending soundtrack.
