Nintendo Confirms Nintendo Switch Save Data Can’t Be Backed Up Or Copied

Nintendo has confirmed what we’ve expected since the day of receiving our unit.

Currently, there is no way to get your save data off the Nintendo Switch. This is quite problematic for the Switch as your save data saves to the actual console rather than on the cartridge (like Nintendo 3DS).

Its also a little perplexing as both the Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS allowed you to copy your save to an external source or back it up by other means.

We can only hope that Nintendo will implement this with a further update, but it’s a definite issue for those that need to return their Nintendo Switch in the interim.

Nintendo’s support site states the below:

  • On Nintendo Switch, game save data is stored on the console’s System Memory. This will not change whether downloadable software or software from a game card is being played.
  • Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.”
