Ultra Sun and Moon Will Be The Last Core Pokemon Games On 3DS

Game Freak has decided that it’s wise to treat Ultra Sun and Moon as an absolute culmination of the Pokemon series as a whole, as the new instalment is set to push the handheld to its absolute limits.

Having thought they’d pushed the system as far as it could go with Pokemon X & Y, a redesign to the handheld itself opened the doors that little bit further. Game Freak’s director Shigeru Ohmori said the team pushed the redesigned 3DS “even further to what we thought was the most we could draw out of it.”

“With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, we’ve tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits,” he told IGN in an interview. “We’re now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out.

“So we’re really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system.”

Whether the series makes a total shift over to the Nintendo Switch remains to be seen, but we do know there is a fully fledged Pokemon RPG in the works for the Switch anyway, as teased at this year’s E3.

Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon release on November 17.
