Facebook has today revealed that it is immediately releasing a new service called ‘Gameroom’ to PC developers. Gameroom is a platform similar to Steam and Origin in the sense that it will allow gaming developers to release their games onto the platform for customers to purchase.
Gameroom will work on web and mobile as well as being available as a dedicated PC app for Windows 7 users.
Valve’s Steam currently has 125 million active users, so it will be a tough battle for Facebook to convince developers that they should go with the newly created platform to sell their games. It’s clear that Facebook already has an advantage with its clear reach through the social media platform. Facebook will also take a cut from each game sold, not dissimilar to Steam or Origin.
