PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Has Been Nominated For GOTY And Gamers Aren’t Happy

The Game Awards has today announced its lineup of contenders for 2017’s Game Of The Year.

It includes the expected suspects such as The Legend Of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5. It also includes PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds which is still in early access. It’s obviously the odd one out, due to the fact that not only is it technically not finished, it’s also the only game on the list that is multiplayer focused.

Personally, I don’t think there’s any major issue with it being included. Obviously it is included in a year where the other four candidates are single player experiences, but PUBG is probably the biggest new gaming franchise in the last 10 years, selling 20 million copies in its first year (before it’s even released). It’s clear that people are enjoying it.

Twitter is conflicted over the inclusion, for a variety of different reasons. We’ve included the hottest takes below.
