It hasn’t been that long since the PlayStation 5’s faceplates have been in the news, with Sony continuing to go after third party sellers of replacement plates and third-party sellers continuing to fight back.
That fight might be even harder now though, with a patent for the console’s faceplate design granted to Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on November 16, 2021. The patent was first spotted by OPAttack.
It remains to be seen whether this is part of a strategy to combat unlicensed plate sales, or simply a standard exercise, but fans are hopeful that it’s an indication of Sony considering sell its own custom solutions or looking toward coloured/themed console variants in the future.
