UPDATE: As of right now, every Australian retailer has sold out of launch day Xbox Series X/S stock. You can still pre-order for Wave 2 from either Telstra All Access or the Microsoft Store (if you’re after an Xbox Series S)
2020 is the year that keeps on giving. I think I can say confidently that the Xbox Series X has sold out in Australia faster than any console before it. It’s unclear if it’s a case of low stock, bots, the fact that people had two weeks to get ready or a combination of all three, but the Xbox Series X is mostly sold out now at all retailers in Australia.
Right now, Amazon is the only retailer that we’re still waiting to go live, so you can head to the listing here and refresh until your heart is content. EB Games was probably hardest hit, with seemingly 1000s of people all hitting the website at once, with only a few managing to walk away with a console. The Microsoft Store followed, before Telstra, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and all other retailers (except Amazon and potentially Target/Big W) seemingly ran out of stock insanely fast. EB Games will now launch post-launch stock at 12pm AEST.
If these Gamestop numbers by Wario64 are to be believed, it looks as though stock was incredibly low in the U.S and there’s no reason to believe that it wasn’t the same case here.
Whilst this was handled in the complete opposite manner to last week’s PS5 pre-orders, the Xbox Series X/S definitely sold out a lot quicker than the PS5 did. When we asked on Twitter, it feels like the people who missed out far outweigh those who managed to sneak an order in.
We’ll keep you posted on Amazon’s pre-order situation and the general situation over the coming days and weeks, but one thing is certain, between the 3080, PS5 and Xbox Series X, it’s going to be hard to come by any gaming tech in holiday 2020. What an exciting, and equally disappointing time to be a gamer.
