What Each Amiibo Does In Zelda: Breath of the Wild

As we said in our review, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild makes better use of Amiibo than any other Nintendo game to-date.

To use Amiibos, you’ll need to wait until you get the Amiibo Rune. You can then use absolutely any Amiibo in any open-area of the game. You’ll also need to turn the functions on in the options setting of the game. It’s also worth noting that you can use these once a day.

The most important thing to note is that you can use ANY Amiibo with Breath of the Wild. Absolutely every Amiibo outside of the Zelda series of Amiibo will give you some form of random items. Obviously, the Zelda ones will give you the best drops.

We’re going to be listing the Amiibo functionality in the order in which they were released.

SUPER SMASH BROS AMIIBO

Super Smash Bros Link

Probably the best unlock in the game. The first time you scan this Amiibo, you’ll get Link’s horse, Epona from the Ocarina Of Time. However, it’s incredibly important to note that it appears that you can only get its once. Every subsequent time you’ll get a random piece of weaponry, food items or a piece of Link’s clothing from Twilight Princess.

Smash Bros Ganondorf

Ganondorf drops some material that you can use for cooking and crafting. You can also get some rare weapons including am Amiibo-exclusive Sword of the Six sages.

Smash Bros Zelda

You’ll get items that you can use for cooking and crafting plus a chest with a rare weapon. The best thing you can get is a Twilight Bow from Zelda.

Smash Bros Sheik

You’ll get items that you can use for cooking and crafting plus a chest with a rare weapon. The best thing you can get is Sheik’s Mask Armour.

Smash Bros Toon Link

You’ll get some fish (of course) plus the potential to get Wind Waker armor, as well as a boomerang.

Twilight Princess Wolf Link:

Probably the second most useful Amiibo in terms of actually giving you something in-game. You’ll get Wolf Link as an ally. He will join you in combat. His amount of hearts are affected by the data saved to the Amiibo from Twilight Princess HD.

ZELDA 30th ANNIVERSARY AMIIBO

8-Bit Link

You’ll be able to get a bunch of barrels which will contain food and rupees. If you’re lucky, you’ll get a piece of classic weapons or a tunic from classic Link.

Ocarina of Time Link

You’ll get a bunch of raw meat as well as a chest which could contain a piece of the Ocarina of Time Link costume or a biggoron sword.

Wind Waker Link

Similar to the Smash Bros Toon Link, you’ll get a bunch of fish plus a chest that could contain a boomerang or Wind Waker armour.

Wind Waker Zelda

You’ll get a bunch of useful plants for cooking plus the potential to get the Hero’s Shield from Wind Waker, which is incredibly useful.

BREATH OF THE WILD AMIIBO

Archer Link

You’ll get a rare bow-type weapon, plus the potential to get a variety of food.

Horse Rider Link

You’ll get a unique horse saddle as well as some food. There’s a small chance of getting a high-end weapon as well.

Zelda

This is a big. You’ll get some plants for you to cook with as well as the Hylian Shield which is by-far the best shield in the game. It’s incredibly rare.

Guardian

You’ll get a chest with rare weapons. You’ll also have the chance to get ancient arrows, which are incredibly helpful in combat.

Bokoblin

Fairly standard. You’ll get a chest which includes a high-power club weapon as well as some meat.

  • I did not get epona from smash bros link until about the 40th time I scanned it. (I would save and then scan the amiibos until I got something good.)

    • I'm assuming you can't save, then go and set the switch and wiiU's timers ahead 24 hours? I don't have either yet so I was wondering if anyone actually tried that, rather than reloading saves.

      • well I had noticed my kids changed the time on my wii u ahead 2 hours and when I switched it back to the right time it reset my amiibo clock and let me use them all again.

  • It would also be cool if Nintendo did a cross-promotion (via game update/patch/free DLC-esque update) that opened up the Fire Emblem amiibo functionality to spawn a chest that has a chance of a Fire Emblem-related weapon and/or armor set piece so that Link can look like a Fire Emblem character. It wouldn't necessarily break immersion into Hyrule, either as they are both high-fantasy genre games.

  • The guide lists more specially obtained items/weapons via amiibo. It lists the Feirce Diety Mask, Chest and Boots, as well as the sword. Sadly, it does not specify which amiibo it is obtained from, only stating "obtained from corresponding amiibo". There is also an entry showing "Cap/Armor/Boots of the Sky", Link's tunic in Skyward Sword. I'm curious as to which amiibo these are from, exactly, as there aren't any Zelda amiibo specific to those games, right now. I wonder if those are related to the datamined information regarding additional 30th Anniversary Zelda amiibo found in the game's code. Perhaps there will be a Majora's Mask young Link-related amiibo, or Skull Kid, or Fierce Diety Link amiibo, as well as Skyward Sword Link, and so on.

    • If you had played through Ocarina of Time, the answer is a bit more obvious, but if you've never played through it - Fierce Deity Link is a version of Link from that game, so the Ocarina of Time Link amiibo has a small chance of dropping these items.

      • Actually Anthony Fierce Deity is from Majora's Mask. It was a mask you were given after you collected all the other mask in the game and could only be equipped in boss fights. Apparently there will be a Majora's Mask amiibo at some point.

  • So can you scan these multiple times or does this work only once in game? for each amiibo?

    Thanks and good post!!

    • I get good weapons and shields, along with good bows from scanning my Amiibo. I've got five from Animal Crossing, found them at walmart online for a few dollars each, so paid $12 for the five of them. I have five from Smash brothers. Finally, I have all of the new Zelda Amiibo. I scan them all every day, and usually have the best shields, bows and swords to use. It's nice to not have to do all the scouring of the map to find some nice gear. I have also noticed that the items they drop increase in damage and durability the more I play. In the beginning, the weapons were nice, but no more than around 20 damage. Now, I have finished the first divine beast, the Elephant in the Zora domain, and have done a lot of the Shrines, so due to this, having two rings of endurance, as well as fourteen or fifteen hearts, they drop really powerful weapons.

I've had some with damage in the 50-60 range, all with huge bonus's into the 20+ such as increased durability or damage increases of different types. Some good critical damage as well. The only amiibo gear drops that don't reach the stars in damage are the bows. Sure, I now get them with more than 38 damage and good durability, they just don't compare to bows you get from hunting Lynel's. Those can be around 35x3, and I've got tons of them with much higher stats. I don't know the exact numbers, but I'd guarantee that there are some that do more than 160 damage, considering that they shoot three arrows for the price of one. Just imagine shooting them with an elemental arrow, it only takes one per shot, but the bow pretends it's shooting three or more at a time. It gets awesome. So yeah, the bows from the drops from the Amiibo don't compare to those bows, but they are still nice if you can't take out Lynel's easily yet.

Also, you won't regret using the Amiibo. If you don't want to spend tons of cash, just buy a few packs of the Amiibo cards. I often have to struggle with choosing which weapon I want to keep and which I want to drop and abandon due to how good the stuff is from the drops. The food items help making cooking less stressful since you never have to worry about running out of items to make potions or food items. Arrows are another nice item you get from Amiibo. I've seen people complain at only having twenty or thirty arrows. I've got a little more than seven hundred normal arrows, and anywhere between one fifty to two fifty of the different elemental arrows. Hell, it may make things too easy, but I'd rather have it and not use it, than want it and not have it. So you can scan those babies every day, and if you have enough of them, you'll be swimming in all sorts of good things:)

    • wondering about this too.
for an example, if i got hylian shield from zelda amiibo, and the item breaks, could i obtain it again with the amiibo? ditto for another weapon/shield obtained from amiibo.

and does epona dies like other horses? what happen then? could i obtain epona again?
i just bought a bunch of zelda's series amiibos but still afraid to use them because of the above and im still pretty early in the game

    • You can scan each Amiibo figure once a day. Certain rewards like getting Epona from the Smash Bros Link happen only once and will be the first time you scan it. On later days when you scan the SB Link amiibo you’ll get a random piece of weaponry, food items or a piece of Link’s clothing from Twilight Princess.

Today was my second scan of it and I got a bunch of fruit and some ice arrows. I'm getting the BotW Zelda amiibo now so I can get the awesome shield.

        • Oh, hmm. And you were in an area where Epona could spawn? I'm sure if you do it somewhere that could be an issue the game wouldn't do it. I went outside a stable before I tried.

I might totally be wrong about the only one time thing, but so far it is what I've seen from other people talking about them too.
