The Australian Government Is Finally Supporting Local Devs But There’s Still Ways To Go

The Turnbull Government has today announced that it will be funding the Game Developer’s Association of Australia (GDAA) with $17,000 to present an Australian games showcase at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco later this year.

This showcase gives local games exposure to a wider audience including reps from Google, Xbox, PlayStation and Sony.

Whilst this is a great start (and about bloody time that the government started supporting our wonderful games industry), there’s still no response to the Senate Inquirity about funding for the local games industry, which is getting more shocking as each day goes on as I’ve personally lost count on just how many days we’ve been waiting for this.

The Australian games development industry generated almost $120 million dollars in revenue in the 2016-2017 financial year, so this is just the start of what needs to be a fruitful investment from the government into our local scene.

  • this article feels like rushed as heck since they cut funding across the board! The turnbull government has gifted $30 million to Foxtel, and you're praising them for the $17,000 they've allocated to signal boost the local game industry? The $120 million in revenue is peanuts in comparison to the global earnings of the game industry! we should be aiming to be competitive, especially when Australia isn't known for much else apart from its mineral exports. What happens when the world becomes less reliant on coal?
