Life Is Strange Developer Deck Nine Has Laid Off 20% Of Its Staff

These are grim times.

Right after the recent announcement that PlayStation is being hit with layoffs affecting a huge 900 staff, Life is Strange: True Colours and The Expanse developer Deck Nine Games has revealed this morning that it’s letting go of 20% of its studio as it’s affected by the games industry’s continued turmoil.

“Like many others in the games industry right now, Deck Nine has been affected by the game industry’s worsening market conditions,” the studio said in a post on X. “Today we made the difficult decision to lay off 20% of our staff. These people are amazing, talented, and awesome developers. They have made a huge impact during their time at Deck Nine Games and we did not take this decision lightly. Please hire these people if you can, they’re amazing.”

According to a post from Deck Nine game director, Stephan Frost, the layoff at the studio could have been a lot worse, but leadership has also taken pay cuts to keep the number down as much as possible. Frost also said that the team at Deck Nine was the strongest it had ever been.

In just the first two months of this year alone, more than 6000 workers in the video games industry have lost their jobs as big pandemic spending comes crashing down and development budgets continue to rise.
