Overwatch Spotlight 2026 made one thing abundantly clear: the future of Overwatch is here, and it’s brighter than Illari’s Captive Sun.
Before we dive into the unprecedented narrative arc, enormous character launch, UI overhaul and more, however, yes, Overwatch is officially losing the “2”.
If you’ve been paying close attention to Reddit Threads and Blizzard Forums alike, this won’t come as a surprise. Fans have been speculating about the change for months, with little sadness over saying goodbye to a digit the community never truly embraced.
Overwatch developers say the rebrand simply “felt right,” and aligns with the team’s long-term vision for a game designed to grow and evolve constantly over time without the need for numbered sequels.
In a move that screams ‘we’re just getting started‘, Season 20 will end on February 11 2026, but instead of Season 21, Season 1 will usher in a new story-driven era of Overwatch with the beginning of The Reign of Talon.
The Reign of Talon is a fully connected narrative arc that will centre around the global rise of Talon and will unfold through worldbuilding events, hero launches, cinematics, short stories, digital comics and more throughout the year.
Players will be able to view each piece of the evolving storyline in real time, centralised in-game via the new fully integrated ‘Narrative Viewer’.
To kick off, Overwatch will host a meta-event – Conquest. During this five-week faction war, players will choose to align with Overwatch or Talon for a heap of rewards like lootboxes, voice lines, 2D cosmetics, weapon charms, legendary Echo skins and exclusive new Rare, Epic and Legendary player titles (including a secret hidden one!).
In an ambitious and unprecedented launch, 5 of the 10 new heroes releasing across 2026 will be playable during Season 1. Following that, an additional hero will launch every season, with each designed to drive the ongoing narrative and add innovative and exciting abilities to disrupt the meta.
You can read more about the 5 new Season 1 heroes in our deep dive right here.
To help accommodate these 10 new heroes, each role will receive a set of sub-roles with unique passive abilities relevant to their function in the field.

In the spirit of embracing a fresh start for Overwatch, Season 1 also features a full interface overhaul and the biggest menu redesign since launch.
This refresh facilitates faster navigation and includes a new 3D hero lobby (which will expand to feature full party in Season 4) as well as a highly requested new notification hub and social panel.
As if this isn’t exciting enough, the overachieving Overwatch team teased some extras to look forward to in 2026, including:
Overwatch Season 1 arrives on February 11, 2026 and is free to play on Xbox and PlayStation, and PC via Battle.net.
