Nintendo Doesn’t Think That VR Has Mass Appeal

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has been dropping bombs at E3 as per usual. Both most major hardware developers now moving into the VR space, Fils-Aime doesn’t think that VR has been embraced by the mass market yet.

“We’ve been looking at the VR space since the days of the Virtual Boy. With us, we want to make sure our next content is going to be mainstream, mass-market approachable, and when something like VR is at that point, you can expect Nintendo to be there.” Fils-Aime told Bloomberg.

Fils-Aime also used the Wii as a comparison when referencing what makes a new piece of technology hit the mainstream. In reference to the Wii “There was a lot of gyroscopic technology out there in the marketplace, but it took the Wii and the Wii Remote to really make it mainstream,” he said. “Even going all the way back to the Nintendo DS, that was the first electronic device that really made extensive use of a touchscreen.”

Fils-Aime also added that he believes that VR is better suited to short snacks of entertainment and not large scaled gaming experiences.

  • I completely agree. It's a VERY niche market, especially with the price point. Their heads are in the right place.

  • This could go either considering they thought the same about online multiplayer. -

  • for once I agree with Nintendo, to bad if took them years to come to that save idea about motion.

  • totally agree with him - I'm getting a PS VR at launch but all have acknowledged that VR will be a slow burn

  • Grrrrr ........nintendo yet again way off where the public is really at!!!! and im pretty sure the iphone really was the first to take full advantage of a touch screen

  • could be right. The price point alone probably rules out a majority of gamers. Not saying VR won't sell, but it's no Wii...
