Can The Nintendo Switch Be Charged Using A Portable Charger?

Well, one of the biggest issues that has had gamers worried since it was initially revealed that the battery life was 2.5-6 hours was in-fact the portability of the Nintendo Switch with such a limited battery.

As soon as our system reached 10% for the first time we whipped out the old portable charged and thankfully, it worked absolutely flawlessly with the USB-C cable provided with our Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

We were quickly back up to 25% again and ready to keep on gaming. Whilst we can confirm that battery life does seem a little bit below what we’re used to with Nintendo consoles, it does in-fact work flawlessly with the three portable chargers that I own.

  • That's great news, however there were other web sites reporting that the Switch actually requires the full 15 Volt 39 Watt (2.6A) which is what the charger that comes with it is. When they plugged in their current portable batteries, which have only 5V outputs (but still with 6A), they weren't able to get enough charge and they would need larger outputs.

Are you able to let us know which brands/capacity/outputs you tried it with that worked? The other reports said they worked, but took a long time to charge (as would be expected with 5V outputs if 15V is needed).

    • That doesn't make a lot of sense really, USB power standards are 5v anyway, at the very least, USB-C is 5v / 3amps so that should be more than sufficient. 5v 2.4 amps should be more than enough to charge it. Maybe the extra power is required while in docked mode, as it probably uses something closer to 20+ watts of power, hence the 39 watts for charging, but handheld mode will probably only use somewhere around 8-10 watts, otherwise handheld mode wouldn't last very long at all.

In fact, at 2.5 hours, and on leaked pictures, I see 3.7 volts output, it would only produce 1.5 amps max to reach that time, so a standard 5v 2.4amp charger should be more than enough to charge while playing it. Otherwise, if it need 5v 6 amps, the battery wouldn't even last an hour.
