3-4 years ago when the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Wii U released, a lot of analysts and industry veterans predicted that consoles would be on the way out.
Well, it looks like they couldn’t be more wrong. As of today, PlayStation has announced that the PS4 has had its best year on the market, with sales now totalling 76.3 million units as of December 31st, 2017. This is just after four years on the market. The PS3 managed to sell 86 million units, but this was with an extra three years on the market. This means that the PS4 is definitely on track to surpass the PS3.
When it comes to other consoles, the Nintendo DS managed to sell 154 million units, whilst the Wii managed to shift an impressive 101 million units globally. The Xbox 360 also managed to sell 85 million units globally, so the PS4 still has some work to do to catch up.
In other impressive news, there’s now 31.5 million PlayStation Plus subscribers (a hefty chunk of change) and the PS Store recorded it’s best month of sales in December 2017.

Who said consoles were dying?
Don't forget they're trying to say gaming is a disease now
The media keeps trying to push the idea smartphone games are going to take over
Wonder when they'll announce the PS5 though. Surely this year?
Tomorrow would be my bet.
Btw, my uncle works at Nintendo
next year at psx for a 2020 release would be my bet
The next generation of consoles won’t be announced this year.
The PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X are the halfway systems of this console generation, PS5 Pro and Xbox One X2 (yeah let’s go with that) will be more then likely announced in another three years or so.
And the Switch is selling a lot too so that’s also solid proof that Nintendo is not doomed as a hardware developer.
