A Bizarre PlayStation 4 5.53-01 System Update Was Just Released

This isn’t something that I’ve ever seen before. I was just sitting on my PS4 when a System Software Update called “5.53-01” popped up in my download list. It only weighs in at 69mb and thankfully didn’t require my PlayStation 4 to restart, but it did say that some games would require the update to play online.

I’ve personally never seen a software update with a hyphen which would indicate that this is another version of the same system software update with a minor update. Usually it’d just go up .01 or jump a little bit further.

The update suggest that it does the below, but there must have been something that PlayStation wanted to patch out urgently.

“This system Software update improves system performance.”

  • guys so where do we stand? is this ok is it from sony or not?like when i get home should i update it or not?

    • Are you serious? Jesus I knew society was getting fucking embarrassingly stupid but do we really need to whip out the tinfoil hats a wonder if a fucking update from the company itself on its hardware is legit...NO hackers didn't hack their way into the Sony servers just to plant a 69mb update.....For fucks sake why are people so dumb.....

      • well, what is wrong with you? call me dumb? well sorry but f you...i ask a normal question ...you can or cant answer but to answer like that...to feel superior...dude sorry but i did not want you to be upset ...so ya what ever.

  • when in the beta, you get incremental updates like this - it will be in relation to a small issue or bug which dind't require a full re-install of the firmware

    • for beta you get 5.50 Beta 1, Beta 2, Beta 3 etc. this is totally different. i have never seen an Update that has a -01 next to it. they normally had a number to the end of the first 2 numbers eg 5.51, 5.52 5.53, 5.54. either someone stuffed up the naming, or this was an update that wasn't meant to be released yet because they were still testing it before they finished 5.54.

anyway, it will be like any other update. stabilisation and performance upgrades. also you dont reinstall the firm with any other updates. a full reinstall would be 800-900mb which none of the updates have been, the bigger updates 4.00, 4.50, 5.00, 5.50 have come close to it but still under.

      • It has had one. There was an issue with the beta a few back and they stopped sharing it then re-opened it as a -01 at the end as it was an amendment to the current patch but it wasn’t a mandatory update if you had the previous, it was just recommended.

So they have used this format before. Not sure why yours was a full download but the hyphened and numbers ones are usually small amendments. They only do numbered ones if something is changing or if it’s planned. This is basically a hot fix - so they must have noticed an exploit or something wrong with the main FW that came out last

        • Just noticed. This FW wasn’t applied to an already obtained 5.53 I don’t think. If not then it is strange. But saying that, I got a firmware update about a week ago and then this one yesterday. So maybe it did release as 5.53 last week to some. Then pulled them out back up so us who hadn’t the update get the smaller patch and those who never got the original 5.53 gets the full update sized one?

  • Kinda interested at what the hacking community representatives will report on this... Although they might not report on it today, they're preoccupied with the sudden Switch exploit leaks right now.
