PlayStation has released a new nine-minute video detailing the creation of its accessible play solution, the Access Controller, in which it explores the design story behind this new hardware which is launching on December 6th this year.
The video is a great watch with insight into how PlayStation consulted with the community and expert groups on what they key challenges were that it had to solve in an accessible controller, and how the design team had to confront their own assumptions and get it wrong over many prototypes and tests to get to where it is today.
It’s especially interesting seeing how the packaging for the Access Controller bucks Sony’s own packaging trends in order to offer a more approachable unboxing experience.

Along with new looks at the creation, and packaging of the PlayStation Access Controller, the first added accessory kit was also revealed, developed in collaboration between SIE and Logitech. The Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit for Access Controller adds extra, customisable plug and play buttons that can be arranged in any way on a slip mat or easily mounted to suit a diverse range of needs.
These extra buttons plug straight into the four 3.5mm expansion ports on the Access Controller, which is an industry-standard connection and will allow players to plug in a range of third-party buttons, switches and other accessories. The kit will be available starting January 2024.
