One of the more interesting things for gamers to get their head around has been the fact that you can only play Xbox Series X games off either the internal Xbox Series X SSD or an Xbox Series X Expansion Card.

We wanted to test and see what actually happened when trying to play a game off a regular 3.0 External HDD, and as expected it doesn’t work. In fact, the Xbox team has done a great job in forewarning people as soon as they try and transfer an Xbox Series X game to a non-compatible drive.

Once trying to play the game off an external HDD, you’re then told to transfer the Xbox Series X game onto either the internal SSD or the Xbox Series X Expansion Card. It’s important to note that this is still a preview operating system so things could change before launch.

In all honesty, I feel like Microsoft has handled the whole internal/external situation really well, both from a hardware point of view with the Expansion Card and also how it’s handled at an operating system point of view as well.
