Sea Of Thieves Is Getting A Free Three-Part Monkey Island Expansion

Violets are blue, roses are red. We're coming aboard. Prepare to eat lead.

One of the big surprises in today’s Xbox Games Showcase was the reveal of a massive new expansion for Rare’s consistently-improving and much-loved online piracy simulator, Sea of Thieves. Not just any expansion, either, but one crafted in tandem with Lucasfilm Games and based on the legendary Monkey Island franchise.

The Legend of Monkey Island is set to be a three-part adventure, released in monthly installments beginning as soon as July 20th. It’ll take players through an all-new tale featuring the hero of the Monkey Island games, Guybrush Threepwood – joined by Elaine, Murray the Demonic Talking Skull, LeChuck and a heap more recognisable faces. The great thing for anyone keen on the whole Monkey Island angle but not a veteran of Sea of Thieves or multiplayer games, is the entire thing will also be playable solo.

Because it takes place in the Sea of the Damned, away from other players, folks who jump in will be free to explore Mêlée Island and Monkey Island at their own pace, collecting treasure, solving puzzles and more. Best of all – it’ll be free!

Split across three hilarious Tall Tales packed with secrets and side-quests, Sea of Thieves: The Legend of Monkey Island invites pirates to meet classic characters, in a new narrative that brings the iconic locations of Monkey Island to the Sea of Thieves.

The adventure begins on Mêlée Island, where pirates can take in the sights, smells and roguish splendour of the island as they seek to uncover why everyone suddenly seems to think quite highly of self-proclaimed mighty pirate, and known poodle pacifier, Guybrush Threepwood. Something’s quite clearly wrong…

This love-letter to the classic adventure game series will be available to play alone or with a crew, with three Tall Tales being added over three months as free updates for all players, starting July 20th.
