The PS5 finally got a form of backgrounds last year with its new Welcome Hub, but there was no way to see the new backgrounds without it overlaying, but that all changes today with the latest update that is rolling out to users gradually.
The new Showcase Mode will allow your background to go full view after a little while of Welcome Hub being idle allowing the full background (animating or otherwise) to display in full view on the screen.
There is also a Slideshow Mode that allows you to rotate your favourite images or backgrounds as well.
