It’s been a weird year full of delayed games, surprise hits, games that have found their feet in 2020, new consoles, and games that clearly have launched in controversial circumstances. To find out about how we voted for our top 10 games of 2020, head here.
Developed by the team behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Immortals Fenyx Rising does take clear inspiration from The Breath of the Wild meaning this is yet another of the year’s Ubisoft open worlds to offer plenty to the player. Though it doesn’t offer the gritty brutality of Valhalla, Immortals is a fresh-faced, tongue-in-cheek tale of an unassuming saviour of the Greek gods, full to the brim of great humour and an eye-watering gorgeous colour palette that begs to be explored.
Given the team’s pedigree and the fact it borrowed liberally from one of the generation’s best games, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Immortals Fenyx Rising is one of the year’s best games and yet it still manages to feel like the surprise packet of the year.
We gave the game a 9/10. In his review, James said: “Immortals Fenyx Rising is an epic adventure that perfectly leverages the rich, storied history of Greek mythology with a focused and honed version of Ubisoft’s now-ubiquitous open-world design. Deviating from the norm, the game’s unique design and structure help Immortals be one of Ubisoft’s most focused adventures and easily one of their most enjoyable yet.”
The game is currently sitting on a 76 on Metacritic.
