More than ever, the idea of what an Xbox game is is muddy, at best. The trillion-dollar company’s pivot to multiplatform is in full effect, to the point that Xbox’s most iconic franchise, Halo, is making its way to rival platforms this year, a quarter of a century after its debut as a video game.
With that in mind, this list of “big Xbox games” will include anything expected to come from one of Microsoft’s first-party studios, including games that are already confirmed to release everywhere, as that’s the status quo. Also included are games that, in their marketing builds, have been tied to the platform, as there’s a feeling that their stories are inherently “Xbox.”
Of course, at this stage, a lot of release dates are up in the air, but we do have an Xbox Developer_Direct coming up, which has become a January fixture over the last few years and, quite often, serves as a platform for all of those pieces to lock into place. Last year’s showcase gave us looks at Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
If Xbox can deliver on the expected year ahead, which feels like a celebration of their twenty-five years in the business and includes releases from four of their biggest tentpole franchises, then it’s going to be a wonderful year for people who’ve found a fondness for the green machine throughout its two-and-a-half decades as an industry disruptor and innovator.
Here’s what we can expect from Xbox in 2026.

Although Activision and Xbox might give players a bit of breathing room on Call of Duty after a lukewarm reception to the most recent entry, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, there’s still a better-than-average chance that we’ll see a new Call of Duty game this year.
Whether it’s a return to the Modern Warfare side of things or something else entirely, remains to be seen.

The Outer Worlds 2 DLC
Release Date: TBC
Platforms: TBC
Obsidian is hard at work on not one, but two story expansions for their latest space-RPG, The Outer Worlds 2. Of course, we don’t have any concrete details on what direction the content will take; however, we expect the first of them to drop later in 2026.

Starfield 2.0
Release Date: TBC
Platforms: TBC
While this isn’t a new release per se, it’s no secret that Bethesda is working on an enormous overhaul of Starfield, which could, in theory, reinvent and revitalise the game, which, for many, felt stale on arrival. It isn’t likely to be a rebirth of Cyberpunk proportions, but a few refinements wouldn’t go astray.
