A New Atari Console Is Coming Out And Nobody Knows Why

Late last week, Atari launched the website www.ataribox.com which housed a hardware trailer. The trailer showcased 21 seconds of retro woodgrain as well as an illuminated Atari logo. It ended with “coming soon” prompting us to believe that Atari were working on either a brand new console or a re-release of one of their many, many retro gaming consoles.

When questioned, Atari revealed at E3 that the Atari was back in the gaming business and that this console would be based on PC technology.

It’s really hard to know exactly what this could mean, but there’s a bunch of people who would be thrilled to have Atari back in there lives. Probably not too many that are keen on playing that incredibly horrible E.T. game, though.

  • Spoiler Alert:
I've seen the Bladerunner 2049 trailer, it looks like Atari won the console wars.

I'm 40 and I remember playing the old 2600. I actually regret not having brought an Atari Jaguar with Aliens vs Predator or the Atari Lynx with handheld California Games. Nostalgia factor 3000.

  • Unpopular opinion: as somene who bought and played that ET game, it is highly overstated how bad it was. Bland maybe, but I liked it. But their overproduction was the killer. Even now we get far worse games on a yearly basis than ET was. It .worked. If nothing else.
