Magic The Gathering’s Tarkir: Dragonstorm Has Arrived And It’s Pouring Dragons

The latest chapter in Magic: The Gathering has arrived, with pre-release events launching today and the set officially releasing on April 11th, 2025. Tarkir: Dragonstorm is all about dragons dominating the skies. Let’s have a quick dive into this new MTG set.

In this set, Tarkir is ravaged by massive dragonstorms, birthing powerful Spirit Dragons that overthrow the old dragonlords and plunge the five clans into war. Amidst the chaos, Narset and Elspeth fight to contain the storms, but Sarkhan Vol stands against them. Meanwhile, Jace searches the Meditation Realm for something that could threaten the entire multiverse.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm introduces two new dragon-themed mechanics: Dragonstorm enchantments, which allow you to recast spells when you play a dragon, and Omens, a new subtype of instants and sorceries with unique costs and effects that grant dragons additional abilities.

The set also marks the return of the five Tarkir clans, each with its own playstyle and unique keyword ability:

• Endure, the Abzan (White, Black, Green) keyword focuses on counters. When playing creatures with Endure players may add N +1/+1 counters or create N/N Spirit tokens.
• Flurry, the Jeskai (Blue, Red, White) keyword allows for mini combo turns with multiple spells. Cards with Flurry trigger an additional effect when you cast your second spell each turn.
• Renew, the Sultai (Black, Blue, Green) keyword allows players to exile cards from their graveyard as a sorcery for fun and profit. To Renew, spend some mana and exile the card for a powerful result.
• Mobilize, the Mardu (Red, White, Black) keyword aims to boost a go-wide strategy for the turn. Creatures with Mobilize trigger when attacking and create more attackers with menace that are sacrificed at the beginning of the next end step.
• Harmonize, the Temur (Green, Blue, Red) keyword is all about big creatures reducing costs. You may cast a card with Harmonize from your graveyard for its Harmonize cost and may tap an untapped creature you control to pay its power in generic mana.

Each of the five clans will have its own Commander deck, allowing you to start playing right away with your preferred faction. With a variety of playstyles to choose from, there’s something for everyone. As a fan of big, stompy creatures (cough Dinos) that hit hard, the Temur clan is right up my alley.

As with all Magic sets, Tarkir: Dragonstorm will offer exciting chase cards for those picking up Collector Boosters. Expect stunning new textured Dragonscale Foil fetch lands, Dragonic cards, Ghostfire foils, and more for players looking to add unique treatments to their decks or collections. Serialized retro-frame cards, limited to just 500 copies, will also return for collectors seeking ultra-rare hits.

Additionally, the set introduces dragon-eye full-art lands, which are already among my favorite new land designs. I’ll definitely be chasing sets to complete some dragon-themed decks.

Tarkir: Dragonstorm is shaping up to be one of the most exciting Magic: The Gathering sets of the year, bringing thrilling dragon mechanics, the return of the Tarkir clans, and stunning new card treatments like Dragonscale Foil. The set launches on MTG Arena on April 8 and will be available for tabletop play worldwide on April 11.
