In a statement obtained by RNZ, it was said that the company received numerous offers, but “these parties did not present any proposals or solutions about how to keep the New Zealand business sustainable”.

ORIGINAL STORY: EB Games has today announced that it will likely be closing all New Zealand Stores and its distribution centre.

EB Games currently has 38 stores in New Zealand and it has deemed that the New Zealand business is no longer viable.

At this stage it is just a proposal and EB Games has entered into a full consultation process with all of the affected New Zealand team members. At the time of writing, Australian stores and the larger Australian business isn’t impacted at a wide level.

The statement sent to all New Zealand and Australian staff reads:

“Regrettably, we are writing to advise you that we have commenced consultation with our New Zealand employees today, regarding a proposal to close the EB Games New Zealand business, including all stores and the distribution centre.

While the Australian business has had significant success and is not impacted, unfortunately we no longer believe the New Zealand business is viable.

This proposal is not final, and no decision will be made until we have completed a full consultation process in good faith with all affected NZ team members, who we are supporting through this process.

We will provide a further update when we are able to at the conclusion of consultation.”
