Disney Lorcana has launched their next big set in their increasingly popular trading card game – and this time it’s all about the Vine! Like all new sets, Attack of the Vine (Set 13) brings with it more new franchises, mechanics, shiny card goodness and some new products. We were lucky enough to be sent some packs and products by Disney AUNZ and Ravensburger, to check out the new offering and what’s in store for Lorcana fans this set.
Attack of the Vines is the second instalment of the game to bring with it new Pixar characters. It’s a welcome mix up after 11 sets of the classic Disney faces, and definitely makes gameplay feel refreshed and new. This time around Monsters Inc., Turning Red, and Up have all made their debuts to the Disney TCG, with more cards from Toy Story, Brave and The Incredibles (introduced in Wilds Unknown) being added to the mix. The Turning Red franchise in particular brings about new mechanics for gameplay in the way of Temporary Shift – the ability to essentially evolve a ‘Red Panda’ character like Meilin Lee, Ming Lee or Grandma Wu into their respective Red Panda form (bringing with it an increase to strength, willpower, lore gain and abilities) and come end of turn, removing all damage taken to the Red Panda form and shifted back down to the original character card underneath.
Players also saw the addition of ‘Team’ cards being introduced with Attack of the Vine. These character cards don two characters and allow for the new ‘Combo Shift’ ability – allowing players to shift from the base character of either character within the team or both at once – which way a player decides to do so can have benefitting traits depending on the team card ability. A little hint for those looking for a deck build, the Sulley & Boo team card should definitely be looked at *wink wink*. The Up franchise has a big focus on locations too, so those location deck fanatics who have been wanting a little more oomph to the location chaos may just find it in Attack of the Vine. As always, the card art continues its incredible run, with the coveted Enchanteds and Iconics of the set taking inspiration from movie poster designs and vibes.
As for the product line up on offer, as always, Booster Display Boxes ($240 AUD) and Booster Packs ($9.99 AUD) are the best ways to get bulk cards, with fan favourites like the Illumineer’s Trove returning once more (albeit seemingly limited in stock depending on region). Two playmats ($35.99 AUD) are on offer – this time there’s the Lion King themed ‘Circle of Life’ playmat, as well as the Monsters Inc playmat. There’s also a new Iconic Mickey and Minnie Card Portfolio ($49.99 AUD) available, holding a very solid 252 cards and showcasing Disney Lorcana’s first Iconic card art on the front and back. Releasing a little bit later will also be the next Illumineer’s Quest – The Great Hunny Rescue ($99.99 AUD). This time around, players of the Illumineer’s Quest will dive head first into the treacherous entanglement of the Vine with the help of Winnie the Pooh and friends, in order to rescue Piglet and take on the monstrous Vine and it’s vicious Vinelings.
For newbies to Disney Lorcana, now is a really great time to jump in and play. The most recent card rotation has been implemented with the launch of Attack of the Vine, meaning everything from Fabled to this new set are legal to play in core constructed gameplay. That means you don’t have to spend too much time (and money) chasing cards for deck builds from any of the first 8 sets (unless you want to play any Infinity formats – which allows you to play every card released). The game has essentially been refreshed and everyone is learning the new ways to play, so there’s no better time to play with friends or head down to your local game store and meet/play with the Lorcana community!
