Super Mario Odyssey Has Sold A Ridiculous Amount Of Copies Already

Nintendo has today announced that Super Mario Odyssey has already sold 9.07 units in two months. This is a ridiculous amount of copies considering the Nintendo Switch has only sold 14 million units. It would put it up there with the highest attach rate of all time.

To put it into perspective, Super Mario Odyssey has sold more copies than any single Wii U game in its four year life span. Mario Kart 8 was only able to sell 8.4m units on the Wii U.

Super Mario Odyssey is also now on track to become the best selling 3D Mario game of all-time.

Nintendo also announced that Super Mario 8 Deluxe has sold 7.33m units and Breath of the WIld is in third place with 6.7 million units. Splatoon 2 is almost at 5m units. These numbers show how successful the Nintendo Switch has become in the first year.

  • I like the fact that, unless EA gives us more specific numbers than what they have for SWBF2, Odyssey is outselling it while only being on a single platform as opposed to 3 platforms, all with massively larger install bases. Steam + PS4 + XBO is nearly 200 million "potential" customers (obviously there's overlap, abandoned accounts/systems, special editions/system failures necessitating a rebuy, etc, but the point still stands) and Star Wars is the second most successful media franchise in the world (Pokemon is #1, Harry Potter #3 and Mario somewhere around #20) but a console with under 15 million units has a game that might actually be doing better. That's crazy!
