A fan modding group has released a conversion mod for Mario Kart 64 that swaps out the original N64 game’s pixelated, pre-rendered character and item models with shiny new HD art that more accurately resembles the high-quality renders in the game’s promotional art.
The mod, which deftly skirts the Nintendo legal convoy by containing all original assets and requiring that users provide their ‘own’ copy of the game files to emulate on a PC, can be downloaded on the group’s official GitHub page here. Its creators suggest that the mod is still a work-in-progress but that work is nearly finished, and the results which you can see below pretty much speak for themselves:
