We’ve been fairly in the dark in terms of how PS5 would handle free upgrades for PS4 games in comparison to Xbox’s Smart Delivery system.
HOW TO GET THE FREE PS5 UPGRADES FOR PS4 GAMES
When the clock ticked over to midnight, a handful of my PS4 games (Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Maneater, Dirt 5, Planet Coaster and Borderlands 3) all appeared in the store with ‘Free PS5 Upgrade’ over the tile.
This is your PS5 recogising that you own a game where there’s a free PS5 upgrade available. You just have to go into the game, then on the right, you’ll see that same ‘Free PS5 Upgrade’ icon. Hit that and then you’ll be able to download the PS5 version.
If you’ve got the disc version of the game, same process in the sense that you go the PlayStation Store and repeat the above.
It’s worth mentioning that it is possible to install both the PS4 and PS5 versions, so you want to make sure you’re just installing the PS5 version. In your cross media bar, you can check this by pressing the option button and clicking on ‘Product’ and it’ll then show you the PS5/PS4 versions.
You can also sort your library/installed into Platforms and selecting PS5 will show you that correct version there.
