After initially being teased late last year, it sounds like the idea of a AAA blockbuster John Wick game is inching closer to reality, with Lionsgate dropping mention of its video game ambitions for the franchise in a recent investor call.
As reported by Comicbook, company executive Joe Drake spoke of the game and claimed that the studio is actively taking pitches, with CEO Jon Feltheimer expressing hope that there will be “something more specific to announce soon on John Wick.”
Drake is quoted as saying, “As it relates to the video game, we are continuing to have those conversations. There’s a ton of energy around it. What I would say is, with the success of a John Wick 4 that actually you see growth from 3% to 4%, which is very rare in any franchise, much less than action franchise, creates a lot of energy and excitement in the company. It does the same with filmmakers, and we’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience.”
So it sounds like it’s still very early days, but Lionsgate is clearly intent on getting the project off the ground. It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll be seeing anything concrete on this particular John Wick video game any time soon – given it doesn’t even have a studio yet there’s easily years between now and it approaching anything material – but we may at least get some kind of confirmation or a tentative announcement in the near future.
For what its worth, John Wick fans should definitely check out Bithell Games’ excellent 2019 tactical role-playing spinoff, John Wick Hex on PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC or Mac.
