Disney Lorcana’s Winterspell officially releases today, marking the 11th set to hit the hands of TCG and Disney fans alike. As the name suggests, Winterspell showcases a snowy and chilled aesthetic, with some of the most beautiful illustrations to date alongside a ton of new mechanics and combos for players to start some snow fights over. This set tells the story of a mysterious vine beginning to grow in the Inklands, and an Elsa glimmer attempting to stop its growth with her mystical powers. However, this inadvertently causes a winter storm to blow through the realm and giving some of our favourite Disney characters a crisp new look.

Winterspell also brings with it some new franchises to the game. This set Lorcana fans get a more fleshed out selection of everyone’s favourite web-footed, caped crusader – Darkwing Duck, featuring heavily in the Sapphire and Steel ink colours and bringing some great synergy between cards within the franchise, allowing for some sneaky damage and ability triggers. Many fans have also waited 11 whole sets for Pocahontas to make her debut, and she is finally here and bringing with her some stunning, vibrant illustrations, sneaky mechanics and even an Iconic rarity card (that’s the best one!). Oh and there’s Christmas themed cards too!

Thanks to Ravensburger, DisneyAUNZ and Modern Brands, we got to check out some of the new cards and playmats available to collectors and players this set. Winterspell products this time round include two playmats – featuring the iconic ‘Dragon Fire’ scene, as well as Ariel in her Sonic Warrior getup. Both are great looking mats, with Dragon Fire’s colour palette really popping off the table, and Ariel bring a more minimal, but bold visual style.

The new cards are what I believe are some of the best, if not THE best, illustrations and artwork to date in Disney Lorcana. For collectors, every card is stunning to look at with such brilliant detail. For players, there’s a whole range of new (and returning) mechanics to enjoy too. Underdog characters are available throughout all ink colours, allowing players to play what would normally be a 2 ink cost (or turn 2 character) on turn 1 instead – meaning some crazy next turn plays not normally possible before (check out the Amber Angel Underdog and thank me later). Making a return to core gameplay is some more traditional board wipe actions and abilities. Cards like the Amber ink ‘Raging Storm’ depicting Stitch, Lilo and Nani is a straight up “Action – Banish All Characters” board wipe, with characters like the new Legendary ‘Wreck-it Ralph – Raging Wrecker’ utilising last set’s introduction of Boost to add a more combo’d board wipe for Ruby players.

It’s evident that Lorcana collectors and players alike are going to thoroughly enjoy what Winterspell has to offer, with it seamlessly adding something for all types of players and fans. Needless to say, Winterspell will make for an amazingly fun set for players (new and continuing) to create new deck builds from, and bolster a variety of ink combinations and deck types hitting the tables at local leagues as well as competitive tournaments.
