Although it fell just short of its predecessor’s enormous opening weekend, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has enjoyed the biggest opening weekend of the year and Universal’s fifth-biggest opening weekend ever.

As reported by Deadline, the star-studded sequel took in a whopping $372.5 million USD against a $110 million USD budget, falling just short of The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s opening weekend of $387.8 million USD.

There’s even more good news for Nintendo and Illumination: it means Super Mario Bros. is the first animated film franchise to have two global openings of more than $350 million USD.

The poor reviews of last week certainly had no bearing on the film’s impressive cume, which has grown to over $414 million USD since its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo.
