As leaked over on Reddit, the updated Nintendo Switch 2 dock will contain a Realtek RTD2175N-CG DisplayPort v1.4 to HDMI 2.1 converter. You’d be forgiven if the significance of that went over your head at first — there’s a lot of technical gobbledygook in there — but the HDMI 2.1 protocol might be familiar to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X owners.
The converter offers support for a video resolution of 4K with 60 frames per second and even 4K120, 8K30, and 8K60, albeit with Display Stream Compression enabled. Given the technical specifications required, it’d be a stretch to assume the Switch 2 would support anything above a 4K60 output, but this adds further fuel to the fire of speculation that the resolution output will get a major bump.
Presently, the Switch offers only 1080p resolutions at 60 frames per second.
We don’t have long to wait now for the official word on the technical specifications of the Nintendo Switch 2 with the Direct happening tonight.
