Overnight, the review embargo dropped for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and things are, to put it lightly, very mixed. The sequel, which follows on from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is currently holding a Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 45%.

The original film, which was released in 2023 and starred Chris Pratt and Charlie Day as the titular plumber siblings, while still certified “rotten,” holds a higher rating of 59%. Of course, the film still went on to gross $1.36 billion, so that’s where the real story will be for the universe-expanding sequel.

Alissa Wilkinson of The New York Times wrote: “There’s a flat empty nothingness to “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” even more than its flat empty predecessor, and that’s a huge bummer.”

Clint Worthington of Roger Ebert scored the film 1.5 out of 4 stars, stating: “It’s cute, and breezy, and rock-stupid, and will probably make a billion dollars again. Such is the world in which we live.”

Ross Bonaime of Collider scored it a 7.0 out of 10, writing: “The story might be thin, and some new characters might not get the attention they deserve, yet The Super Mario Galaxy Movie remains a charming, often hilarious, and playful testament to the greatest video game franchise of all time.”

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is out today, April 1, in cinemas.
