Sydney Won Big At The First Melbourne Esports Open

It was a pretty wild weekend as the Melbourne Esports Open took over the Melbourne Park district as it was esports that took over the likes of Margaret Court Arena and Rod Laver Arena in the name of friendly competition.

It turns out the homecourt advantage wasn’t nearly enough to get it done for local teams as it was the Sydneysiders that took home the chocolates over the course of the weekend.

Saturday was home to the Australia finals for the second season Overwatch Contenders tournament. Throughout the qualifying stages, the Sydney Drop Bears always looked a cut above the rest and their form carried through to the finals. They took on Dark Sided in the final and did it with ease, winning 4-1 to take home their second consecutive Australian title.

And today, Rod Laver Arena hosted the Oceanic Pro League grand final for League of Legends between the Dire Wolves and the Chiefs.

It was the Dire Wolves who won the split, qualifying for Worlds 2018 and cementing a dynasty after two years of unrelenting dominance. The guys will represent Oceania at the event which is to be held in South Korea, which is a culmination of the 2018 competitive season.

So it was an excellent weekend if you’re an esports fan from Sydney because your teams absolutely cleaned up this weekend.
