As well as detailing PS5 backwards compatibility for PS4 games, Sony has now also detailed how we’ll get the PS5 upgrades for PS4 games that are eligible. This is for games that have free upgrades such as Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, Watch Dogs Legion, Miles Morales, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Marvel’s Avengers, FIFA 20 etc.
It’s fairly straight forward. If you’re using a disc, you just need to have signed into your PSN account on your PS5, insert your disc, go to the game hub for the game and select the upgrade offer and then download the content. You’ll then be able to play a digital version of the PS5 game with the PS4 disc (and keep it inserted).
As a reminder, the PS4 versions of a bunch of games are a lot cheaper than they are on PS5:
To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. PS4 game discs can’t be used with the PlayStation®5 Digital Edition.
To upgrade an eligible digital PS4 game you already own to the digital PS5 version:
As reminder, if you’re getting a PS5 all-digital console, and own the discs for PS4 games, you won’t be able to upgrade to the PS5 version.
