In a blog post, Epic announced that it will be receiving substantial funding from both Sony and Kirkbi, the holding company for LEGO.
Each company is set to invest $1 billion USD into the Fortnite developer and Unreal Engine developer with the aim to “create new social entertainment exploring the connection between digital and physical worlds.”
While neither investment is final and remains subject to the usual regulatory approvals, Kirkbi’s investment shouldn’t be a surprising one after it was announced just last week that Epic and Lego would be partnering to create a safe space for kids as we enter this new metaverse future.
Similarly, Sony already has a history of investing in Epic having already sunk an additional $450 million USD over the past two years.
It’s fascinating to see Sony making all of these big plays, especially on the heels of their acquisitions of both Bungie and Haven Studios.
