The First Street Fighter 6 Gameplay Trailer Takes Things Open-World

It's looking like a great mix of old and new

Capcom turned up in a big way for the State of Play this morning, and one of their key announcements was the first gameplay reveal for Street Figher 6.

While we already knew Ryu and Luke would be featuring in the game based on the teaser trailer released in February, the trailer also revealed a brand new character named Jamie as well as series stalwart Chun-Li. Jamie looks to utilise a drunken fighting style which I think hasn’t been done before in a Street Fighter game.

We don’t know a whole lot about how the new fighting mechanics work, but it looks to be merging some kind of focus attack from Street Fighter 4 with the style and flow of Street Fighter 5. As always, it’s hard to judge until you get a chance to physically play it but it looks like a step up and a best of both worlds kind of situation.

While it wasn’t quite elaborated on, it also looks as if there will be an adventure or single-player mode in which your character will take to the streets (literally) to explore and battle other fighters. It’s a single-player mode called World Tour.

The game will also feature a new commentary system that will somehow dynamically adjust commentary from a set of commentators to give every match that eSports feel. There’s been some dabbling with announcers in the past games though nothing as exhaustive as this. While this feature isn’t personally for me, I can see the appeal but hope I can dial it down.

Street Fighter 6 releases in 2023 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It appears that this time it’ll be skipping Xbox One.

Capcom has promised deep dives into the newer modes, so keep an eye out in the future for the latest. We’ll of course keep you updated.
