Cyberpunk 2077’s Game-Changing 2.0 Update Is Available Now

Update: Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 Update is now available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC platforms. Those keen to get back into Night City ahead of next week’s release of the Phantom Liberty DLC expansion can now jump back in with their existing character and check out the redesigned skill trees and perks or fire up a brand-new save with time to spare to get prepped for a visit to Dogtown on the 26th.

We just published our full review of the Phantom Liberty expansion as well as our thoughts on the update, giving it a huge 10/10 and saying “On the back of Phantom Liberty, along with a really substantial rebuild of all of the game’s core systems, Cyberpunk 2077 manages to wash its hands of its past failures and emerges as the genuine article. At last, it’s the intoxicating escape I once thought it was and stands out, to me, as the premiere role-playing resort in what might very well be a modern golden age for the genre.”

Original Story: CD Projekt Red has finally revealed the release date for the long-awaited Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 Update, a free major update for the game that brings with it a huge number of gameplay enhancements and systems overhauls for the game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The good news for those hoping to jump back into the game and get reacquainted (or start it for the first time) ahead of the paid Phantom Liberty expansion’s release date of September 26th, is that the 2.0 Update is set to drop five days beforehand on September 21st.

As a reminder, the free 2.0 Update will contain the following (and then some):

CYBERPUNK 2077 UPDATE 2.0 – FREE UPDATE

  • Redesigned skill trees and perks
  • Revamped cyberware and new capacity system
  • Vehicle combat and car chases
  • Combat Al improvements
  • New police system
  • UI and UX improvements
  • Loot, items and crafting changes
  • New radio stations (including Community Radio Station Growl FM)

Early impressions of the update have come from various overseas outlets as well, which mostly seem to agree that it’s had a transformative effect on the game and finally made it feel like the product it should’ve been at the start. Which, obviously, isn’t the ideal situation overall but still a positive outcome.

Gamespot said, “From front to back, Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 gameplay changes are stellar, and I really wish it was there at the start because it would have left a lasting impression. Of course, however, it doesn’t change the bigger shortcomings I found in my first playthrough–that’s not what this rework was intended to do. The original story is intact which has some genuinely powerful moments and thrilling setpiece battles. But the inconsistent tone and character portrayals, along with some of that overly edgy dialogue, are just as prevalent in a second run. And the quests themselves still have their spectacular highs and underwhelming lows, and the latter surfaces a bit more because of how great the core gameplay has become.”

Inverse said, “It’s hard to understate just how much the 2.0 update changes how you play Cyberpunk 2077. The police and car combat add some new options, and reworked Perks and Cyberware completely change combat and stealth for the better. With three years of fixes and now this massive update, Cyberpunk 2077 feels like it’s achieved its original vision. This is — finally — a game that can be recommended without caveats.”

Meanwhile, Kotaku remarked that Cyberpunk 2077’s 2.0 update “feels like a different game,” noting that it might not change everyone’s mind or remedy every issue that the game has, but that it’s “the mechanical realization of what the game probably always should have been.”
