This morning saw the arrival of a big new PlayStation State of Play presentation, and with it a heap of new trailers and updates on games for PS5 and PS VR2, including some exciting stuff coming later this year.
One somewhat surprising new announcement was the reveal of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, which is looking to reinvigorate the long-running “musou” franchise using the power of the PS5 and a fresh lens on some of the series’ traditions.
Dynasty Warriors: Origins not only promises the largest armies ever seen in the Dynasty Warriors series, but it’s also bringing some new ideas to the table including a new original and nameless protagonist for players to embody for a new way to experience the iconic soldiers and generals that fans know and love.
The studio at Omega Force is back on task, of course, and it’s aiming to go back to the series’ hack and slash roots while it also “redefine expectations.”
In a PlayStation Blog post accompanying the announcement, the studio writes, “Since Dynasty Warriors 2 (the original Dynasty Warriors was a fighting game!), the roots of this series have always been based around the “sense of realism on the battlefield” and “the exhilaration of 1 vs. 1,000” gameplay. In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, we will return to these roots to deliver this non-stop action to not only our most loyal fans of the series, but to all game fans worldwide. In Dynasty Warriors: Origins, we’ve been able amplify the feeling of tension on the battlefield while also being able to deliver the epic sense of exhilaration after overcoming the odds in the most thrilling warfare we’ve ever been able to create.”
It does genuinely look impressive in action with a staggering number of enemies on screen at once, which is all that franchise fans could really ask for at this point. The game is due to launch in 2025.
