Sony is full steam ahead with the ending of disc production, with it now adding a label to PS5 console boxes confirming that from 2028 you will no longer be able to buy PlayStation games on discs for the PS5.
The notice reads: “IMPORTANT NOTICE: Starting in January 2028, new PlayStation game releases will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and through retailers exclusively in digital format. Game discs released before January 2028 will continue to be compatible with this console. ”
This discovery was made by BehindTheTimes on Twitter, and appear to have been found in France so far, but we’d expect this to be rolling out on all new PS5 consoles in the coming months, likely giving people a full 12 months notice when purchasing a console.
The announcement of discs coming to an end took place a month ago, and there’s still over 12 months of PlayStation discs being printed for PS5 before they come to an end, when the PS6 presumably will be released and be digital only alongside its rumoured handheld.
