It wasn’t all that long ago that we reviewed the Dell Alienware AW3423DW gaming monitor, a 34″ ultrawide beast that sported the first QD-OLED panel in the category and blew us away with its image quality. The only real downside at the time? A lack of HDMI 2.1 support meaning the monitor was amazing for PC gaming but a touch less compelling for anyone hoping to play PS5 and Xbox Series X games on it with the latest display features.
Now, Alienware has come back for a second round with the updated AW3423DWF, which not only improves the overall design of the monitor but adds at least one crucial feature for console users – VRR support up to 120Hz. As far as we’re aware, the new model’s single HDMI port is only 2.0 but VRR will certainly help justify this as a combined PC/console display for some.
The AW3423DWF drops the G-Sync module of the previous iteration in favour of AMD FreeSync™ Premium Pro support, but also comes in at USD $200 cheaper (local pricing hasn’t been revealed yet but by comparison we’d estimate it to be around AUD $1799-1899 versus $2299 for the prior model):
It’s worth noting that the AW3423DWF model won’t be replacing the existing one, but will exist alongside it as an alternative. It’s also slightly slimmer for easier wall-mounting so it seems to us to be the version of choice unless you really need that G-Sync support and slightly higher 175Hz refresh rate.
We’ll be sure to bring you updates on local availability and pricing as they arrive.
