The Verge’s Tom Warren, a fairly consistent source of leaks and inside sources, has reported that Microsoft is currently gearing up for a big June showcase to take place just after Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest, and that the event will see the announcement of a brand-new Gears of War title.
The article, which opens on an exploration of the ever-evolving situation within Microsoft’s gaming division including the departure of executive Kareem Choudhry and the shifting sentiment around platform exclusivity, claims that we’ll see a new Gears and a new Call of Duty announcement as well as release dates for a number of anticipated titles including Avowed and Indiana Jones.
“As the Xbox strategy continues to evolve inside Microsoft and Choudhry’s departure triggers more shake-ups, Microsoft is in the middle of planning for its big summer Xbox showcase,” Warren writes. “I understand this is set to take place on Sunday, June 9th, and Microsoft is currently planning to announce a new Gears of War game at the show. A Gears announcement won’t be the only new Xbox game at the show, which will also include release dates for upcoming Xbox games like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and of course, a new Call of Duty that’s set to debut later this year.”

The article also claims, via sources, that Microsoft is continuing to evaluate bringing more of its catalogue to PS5 and Switch consoles, and that Sea of Thieves’ upcoming April 30th launch in particular will be a “key test” for whether it brings more games across.
Summer Game Fest 2024 will once again be held in-person at the YouTube Theatre in Los Angeles as well as streamed live across multiple platforms when it kicks off on Saturday, June 8th, 2024 at 7AM AEDT.
Ubisoft has also confirmed that it’s once again going to have a special Ubisoft Forward showcase being presented live from Los Angeles (and beamed around the world, of course) on June 10th.
