Xbox has announced that it will begin to test ad-supported game streaming with Xbox Insiders starting today.
In this limited test, Xbox owners will be able to stream games from their library with ads that will play before the session begin, with none playing during the gameplay experience. This session will last an hour across supported devices.
Xbox says that this will allow those that own an Xbox One to play Xbox Series X games without purchasing a new console, and naturally we’d expect that this is maybe something that will roll out to Xbox Game Pass with a cheaper tier as time goes on.
They’ve also posted a list of core values they will stick to when it comes to ad-supported streaming:
- We start with the player. Ads should create value.
- We do not interrupt the flow of gameplay.
- We hold ads to the same quality bar as our content.
- We’re clear about what’s advertising.
- We make sure ads fit what players expect on each platform.
