Everything You Need To Know About Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Nintendo lifted the lid of their most ambitious Super Smash Bros game, Super Smash Bros Ultimate and there was a lot of information to take in from the Direct. We’ve rounded up all the major stuff into one handy place.

THE NAME AND RELEASE DATE

The game is called Super Smash Bros Ultimate (which is probably because of some of the stuff you’ll learn below) and it’s launching on December 7th. Just in time for you to become addicted before your holiday break.

EVERY CHARACTER IS BACK

Yep, that’s right. Nintendo announced that every single character that has been in a Super Smash Bros game will be in in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. Snake, Ice Climbers and even Wolf. For your reference, that’s literally like 66 characters so far.

THE NEW CHARACTERS ARE AWESOME

During the Direct, Nintendo showed off the Inklings, the most requested character Ridley and Daisy who plays similarly to Peach, but still looks mega awesome. It’s possible Nintendo will keep announcing

RETURNING CHARACTERS HAVE NEW LOOKS

We got a glimpse of this in the reveal trailer, but characters such as Link, Mario and even Zelda have brand new looks. Link can now wear his Breath of the Wild look, but also still back to his OG green Tunic. Mario can wear his Super Mario outfit complete with Cappy or even his wedding outfit and Zelda takes inspiration from a Link to the Past. Pikachu Libre is also in the game and can bow be played as a female.

THERE’S NEW LEVELS AND OLD ONES TOO

Nintendo definitely didn’t talk about levels as much as they did characters, but I like what I’ve seen so far. They showed off a Breath of the Wild tower level and confirmed that old levels would be getting a new lick of paint. 3DS levels such as the Animal Crossing level are back in action.

SOME PLAYERS HAVE GAUGES NEAR THEIR HEALTH BAR

Where appropriate, some players now have gauges near their health bar to indicate when their special ability is out. For instance, Inkling only has a certain amount of ink, where Cloud’s limit gauge can also be seen near his health bar. Villager can still pocket an item, and you’ll see exactly what it is near his health bar.

KIRBY IS STILL A MASSIVE SUCKER

Kirby has always been able to use his copy ability in the game, but with so many characters it was always going to be challenging. Nintendo confirmed that he’d be able to copy every single characters ability in the game.

YOUR AMIIBOS STILL WORK

Yep, Nintendo confirmed that all Smash Bros Amiibo as well as normal counterparts will work with this game in an almost identical way to how they did in Super Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U.

GAMECUBE CONTROLLERS ARE BACK

Ninendo also confirmed they’d be re-releasing the Gamecube controllers with a slight change to the design. Thankfully, you’ll still be able to use your old Gamecube controllers as well as the connector that was sold for Wii U.
